What is Tomato flu? Symptoms, treatment, precautions | All you need to know

Tomato fever, is an unidentified fever that has recently been detected in Kerala among children below five years of age. Here is all you need to know about the mysterious disease.

A rare viral disease, also known as Tomato fever, is an unidentified fever that has recently been detected in Kerala among children below five years of age.

The flu causes rashes and blisters on the infected child's body, which are generally red in colour, hence it has been named ‘Tomato flu’ or the ‘Tomato fever.’

Tomato flu has some symptoms similar to that of Chikungunya, such as high fever, body ache, joint swelling, fatigue. However, infected children also experience rashes and skin irritation, further causing blisters on parts of the body.

Abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea, discolouration of the hands, knees, buttocks are some other symptoms.

On the other hand, the exact cause behind the disease is not yet known and health officials are still investigating the main causes of Tomato fever.

As per the local media reports, more than 80 children have been infected with tomato flu in Kerala's Kollam. Cases have also been reported from Aryankavu, Anchal and Neduvathur in the southern state. All confirmed cases are children below five years.
