The West Bengal Police has cracked down on persons making anti-India comments on social media over the past few days, as armed conflict between India and Pakistan was raging on the western front.
Arrests were made from Hooghly, Murshidabad, Asansol, Howrah, Barasat, Bankura and Uttar Dinajpur by the police for making posts on social media that indicated anti-India sentiments or any mischief.

“We have picked up people from all across the State, whoever tried to make any offensive remarks, whatever the intent might be,” a senior West Bengal Police officer told The Hindu.
Police said that six to eight persons were arrested over the past few days, but the number of offensive posts was far fewer on this occasion. “We realised that there was an overwhelming unity among the people and very few exceptions. Since such posts were far too few, we could track each of the violations,” the official said. The police have booked the violators for creating enmity between two communities among other charges.
In Hooghly, one arrest was made from Balagarh and another arrest was made from Pandua in the district on Saturday (May 10, 2025) night. Arrests were made from Raipur block in Bankura on Saturday (May 10, 2025) night for posting a disrespectful post against the Indian Army on social media. On Saturday (May 10, 2025), police arrested a youth from Murshidabad on the same charges.
In certain cases, the offensive social media posts were highlighted by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) IT cell workers. On one occasion when a hawker from Murshidabad had posted various anti-India pictures and writings on social media, some locals had caught the person and made him chant slogans in support of India.
