West Bengal civic polls: Voting to elect 2,171 councillors across 108 municipalities underway

Voting is underway to elect 2,171 councillors across 108 municipalities in West Bengal on Sunday.
Voting for West Bengal civic polls is underway to elect 2,171 councillors across 108 municipalities. The polling began at 7 am in the morning and will be held till 5pm across 20 districts of the state.
The major political parties contesting elections are TMC, BJP, CPI(M)-led Left Front and Congress.
The ruling Trinamool Congress bagged all five civic bodies in recent elections, including the high-profile Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Now they are trying to get as many seats as possible this time.

As the voting is underway since morning, some sporadic incidents of poll related violence have been reported. News from South 24 Pargana, North 24 Pargana and Hooghly are coming in where opposition parties alleged that they have been attacked by TMC workers.
At a time when oppositions are targeting TMC for creating ruckus in recent elections and demanding polls to be conducted in the presence of the central force, the Calcutta High Court directed the State Election Commission to assess the situation and decide on the deployment of central force in poll-bound civic bodies.
However, the BJP moved to the Supreme Court challenging the High Court's order. But the Apex Court dismissed the plea.
