Barring something crazy happening, Jessie Buckley is going to win a best actress Oscar next weekend for her gut-wrenching performance in "Hamnet." It's almost as fun watching her battling the patriarchy and society as a wild and unhinged reanimated rebel.
The Irish actress plays the title role in "The Bride!," Maggie Gyllenhaal's twisted twist on "The Bride of Frankenstein," and Christian Bale plays Buckley's stapled and broken partner in crime. You can check out that monstrous tale in theaters now as well as "Hoppers," the latest Pixar animated movie that's funnier than anything they've done in recent memory. But if you're needing a TV show, and especially if you live for all things "Yellowstone," Luke Grimes reprises his role from the Western drama for spinoff "Marshals."
Now on to the good stuff:
If you've seen the original 1935 "Bride of Frankenstein," you know that Elsa Lanchester's title character is barely in the movie yet has still become iconic. Jessie Buckley gets tons more to do in Maggie Gyllenhaal's "The Bride!" Renanimated to be a mate for Frank (Christian Bale), the patchwork monster of Mary Shelley's literary classic, the Bride rediscovers her identity while on a crime spree with her lover in in a violent, genre-defying romance full of grand ideas and big swings. (Peep my ★★★ review.)
