Water released from Pechiparai dam for irrigation

Kanniyakumari District Collector releases water from Pechiparai dam for irrigation, benefiting 79,000-acre agricultural lands in the district.
Kanniyakumari District Collector R. Alagumeena released water from Pechiparai dam on Sunday, for irrigating agricultural lands under the command area of Kodhayar and Pattinamkal canal in the district.
Speaking at the event, she said that the water from the Pechiparai dam would be released from June 1 to February 28, 2026 for the irrigation of around 79,000-acre agricultural lands. She added that the discharge would be regulated at 850 cusecs, depending on the necessity and the availability of water in the dam. In the same period water would also be released from Peruchani, Chittar I and Chittar II dams, she noted.
She noted that the 79,000-acres of agricultural land spread across six taluks in the district. Of this, 16,000 acres were under paddy cultivation, 15,000 acres were cultivated with bananas, and 50,000 acres were under coconut cultivation. Through the Thovalai canal 12,868 acres of land were irrigated. A total of 19,711 acres were irrigating through the Padmanabhapuram Puthanar canal and 10,457 acres were irrigating through Ananthanar canal.
Additionally around 64,000 acres of land were being irrigated through Nanjil Nadu Puthanar Canal, Pazhayar canal, Pattinamkal canal and other small canals across the district.
Killiyoor constituency MLA S. Rajesh Kumar and officials from the Public Works Department were present at the event.
