Known as a warming centre on wheels, the Care Bus in Thunder Bay, Ont., serves as a lifeline for the city’s most vulnerable during the winter months.
The bus is run by NorWest Community Health Centres (NWCHC) and operates from mid-November through the end of March. It stops at key locations across town — such as emergency shelters, meal services, libraries, and health and social service agencies — providing free transportation to those who need it the most.
Since its launch this season, the bus has tracked about 2,650 riders, with an average of 75 riders a day. It’s also engaged with upwards of 700 people along its route through distributing food and warm winter wear, NWCHC chief executive officer Juanita Lawson told CBC News on Wednesday.
Due to the high demands, the bus has extended its hours in January and February to operate from 9:30 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. daily. Its hours will return to 1:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. come March.
“We know every winter can be different but we also know January and February can be extremely cold,” Lawson said. “We've staffed up and we've got additional resources in place to offer that service during that period of time.
