Canadian military members and civilians are among the personnel NATO has pulled out of Iraq as the country faces retaliatory attacks from Iran along with other Gulf countries during the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran.
Defence Minister David McGuinty says the Canadian Armed Forces and civilians who were there serving on the NATO advisory mission in Iraq are safe and in a secure location.
"As we continue to monitor the situation in the region, we call on all states to respect international law and uphold the fundamental principles of international prosperity and security," McGuinty said in a statement to CBC News.
The military alliance confirmed on Friday it withdrew the last of its military trainers from Iraq and moved them to Europe.
The non-combat NATO mission that launched in 2018 is aimed at training and advising Iraqi forces to help stabilize the country and fight terrorism. The mission involves several hundred personnel from NATO allies, Austria and Australia, NATO's website says.
"I would like to thank the Republic of Iraq and all the allies who assisted in the safe relocation of NATO personnel," said U.S. Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, Supreme Allied Commander Europe said in a statement.
The NATO mission will continue from Joint Force Command Naples, Grynkewich said.
"Canada remains committed to supporting international peace and stability in coordination with our partners and NATO Allies," McGuinty said.
The Canadian government was criticized this month for failing to tell the public about a reported Iranian missile strike on an airbase in Kuwait where Canadian Armed Forces members are stationed. No Canadian military members were injured.
Conservative defence critic James Bezan said it was "really shameful" the Liberal government wouldn't be transparent and tell the public how Canada is impacted by the war.
The Department of National Defence at the time said due to operational security it does not discuss "assessments of damage or impacts to military facilities."
