The voting for bypolls to three Lok Sabha seats and seven Assembly seats is scheduled across five states and Delhi is being held on Thursday. The bypolls are underway in Delhi, Punjab, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Jharkhand today and the counting of votes will take place on June 26. In May, the Election Commission released the schedule for the bypolls to the parliamentary and assembly constituencies in five states and Delhi.

The voting is underway for the bypoll to Rajinder Nagar seat in Delhi, which is largely seen as a battle between AAP and BJP for the crucial assembly constituency. A total of 1,64,698 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in the bye-election, in which 14 candidates are in the fray. AAP has fielded Durgesh Pathak against BJP former councillor Rajesh Bhatia and Congress’s Prem Lata.

Delhi Chief Electoral Officer Ranbir Singh was quoted by PTI as saying that mock polls were held at all polling stations and voting has begun under tight security arrangements. Six companies of CAPF have also been deployed. The bypoll was necessitated in the wake of AAP leader Raghav Chadha leaving the seat after being elected to the Rajya Sabha recently.

A prominent seer, Pranavananda Swamiji, alleged that mutts backing Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to take over the top post were denied any allocation in the state budget presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. He reiterated his support for Shivakumar to take over as the chief minister.

According to the police, 19-year-old Sachin Dharmendrabhai Chaudhary, who works as a labourer, had borrowed the money before expressing his inability to repay it immediately, police said. He was allegedly threatened with his life over the delay in repayment. Fearing for his life, Sachin immediately alerted the police.
