Visakhapatnam police booked over 20,000 traffic violations in nine days, emphasising helmet use and speed limit adherence for safety.
The city police have intensified their crackdown on traffic violations, booking about 20,866 cases under the Motor Vehicles Act during a special enforcement drive conducted over the past nine days.
A majority of the violations relate to helmet usage, with 10,587 cases registered against riders for not wearing helmets. Police have also booked several pillion riders found without helmets at multiple locations across the city. In addition, over 320 drunken driving cases and about 625 cases of triple riding have been registered during checks carried out at various points.
To curb overspeeding, the department has deployed three newly-acquired interceptor vehicles. These have helped detect violations, leading to the booking of 1,836 overspeeding cases during the same period.
The interceptor vehicles have been stationed at key traffic corridors and high risk zones, including PM Palem, IT SEZ, Beach Road, Harbour Road, airport areas and Pendurthi, among others.
Traffic officials said cases are being booked as per the revised speed limit guidelines, under which the maximum permissible speed in core city areas has been fixed at 40 kmph.
Commissioner of Police Shankabratha Bagchi said the intensified enforcement drive, along with revised speed limits, is aimed at reducing accidents and ensuring safer commuting conditions. He urged motorists to strictly follow traffic rules, particularly helmet use and speed limits, to avoid penalties and ensure their safety.
