In an early morning incident, a tragic road accident in north Bengaluru’s Yelahanka claimed the lives of two pedestrians on Sunday, the police said.
The complainant, who is the brother of one of the deceased, has blamed officers of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in charge of the stretch for the mishap, citing lapses in ensuring critical infrastructure.
The deceased have been identified as Shantappa Metri, 35, and Siddarth, 18; both of whom had disembarked a bus minutes before the accident. They were attempting to cross the road at the time of the incident, according to the police report reviewed by The Hindu.
The accident occurred around 5.45 a.m. on Sunday near the Vidyashilpa Cross. According to the complaint, the victims were travelling from the Devanahalli side towards Bengaluru. Despite the absence of a designated bus stop on the national highway, a private bus allegedly halted on the main road and dropped them off.
As the two attempted to cross the highway towards Allalasandra, they were hit by a speeding motorcycle coming from the Hebbal side towards Devanahalli. The rider was allegedly speeding and driving negligently.
The impact of the collision caused injuries to both pedestrians, to their heads and limbs, leaving them dead on the spot. The motorcyclist also sustained injuries.
