Visakhapatnam honours women from different fields on International Women’s Day

Visakhapatnam celebrated International Women's Day with rallies, awareness programs, and ceremonies honoring women's achievements and initiatives.
Rallies, awareness programmes, and felicitation ceremonies marked the International Women’s Day celebrations in the city on Sunday (March 8, 2026). The district administration, government departments, educational institutions, and organisations came together to mark the occasion.
Officials from the district administration organised the International Women’s Day celebrations in a grand manner at the AU Convention Centre on Sunday. District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad said that both the Central and the State governments are providing significant support to women through schemes such as ‘Bal Sanjeevani’, ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’, ‘Stree Shakti’ and ‘Thalliki Vandanam’.
He noted that nearly 40 lakh women have benefited from the ‘Thalliki Vandanam’ scheme and added that employment opportunities are also being created for women through the PMEGP programme.
Bheemunipatnam MLA Ganta Srinivasa Rao announced that steps were being taken to establish a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for women on 50 acres at Gidijala in Anandapuram mandal. He added that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has responded positively to the proposal.
He recalled that former CM late N.T. Rama Rao had brought recognition to women by granting them property rights and giving them priority in local bodies. He said Mr. Chandrababu Naidu was also implementing several welfare schemes in the same spirit. He noted that DWACRA groups have earned recognition worldwide and that schemes such as “Thalliki Vandanam” and “Stree Shakti” are helping women achieve economic independence.
Visakhapatnam North MLA Vishnu Kumar Raju said that under the Stree Shakti scheme, free travel facilities were being provided to women, and around 50 crore journeys have been recorded so far.
