Two assailants who were part of a 10-man gang were nabbed by villagers when they were trying to extort money from gold merchants in Karnataka’s Mandya. The villagers tied up the men to a tree and thrashed them.
Villagers of Pandavpura in Karnataka’s Mandya foiled a murder attempt, caught hold of two of the accused (out of 8), tied them to a tree and thrashed them. The incident took place on Thursday, September 15.
The ten-man gang had been following gold merchants Balaji and Siraj in two cars. When the merchants reached the Srirangapatana-Jevargi National Highway, the gang overtook their car.
When the merchants’ car came to a stop, the gang attacked them with machetes. One of the accused had a gun pointed at Siraj, who screamed upon seeing this.
Hearing his cries, villagers who were passing by attacked the accused. Two of the accused were apprehended by the villagers while the other eight men escaped with the cash.
Mandya Superintendent of Police, Nitish, said, “On Thursday morning two people were travelling from Davangere to Mysuru in their car. They were stopped by a gang of 8 members in Mandya District. The accused threatened the people and stole a bag containing Rs 1,10,000. The victims screamed for help and locals nearby rushed to the spot and apprehended two accused but the others managed to flee.”
He further said, “Locals tied the accused to a tree and assaulted them. Meanwhile, police reached the spot and arrested the two accused and also recovered an airgun from them. Based on the victims' complaint, a case was registered against the accused and a manhunt has been launched to nab the others.”
Further investigations are underway.
