Vijayapura hospital performs its first successful kidney transplant, highlighting the importance of organ donation for patients in need.
Doctors of the BLDE Association B.M. Patil Super-speciality Hospital and Research Centre have successfully carried out kidney transplantation on a patient in Vijayapura. This is the first such operation in the hospital, the doctors said.
The other kidney harvested from a 30-year-old brain-dead patient was transported to Kalaburagi.
Balaram Krishna Bagalkot was seriously injured in an accident on February 9. On Friday, he was declared brain dead.
Following counselling by the hospital’s officers, family members of the young man agreed to donate his two kidneys and eyes.
Doctors harvested these organs. The body was handed over to the patient’s relatives, sisters Shruti Halladamani, Roopa, brother Parashurama Krishna Bagalkot and uncles Kashinath and Shravan Kumar.
One of the kidneys was used to treat a patient under the State government’s Jeevan Sarthakate Scheme.
