Director SS Rajamouli's Varanasi is dominating headlines after reports about its release date and plot surfaced on social media. Now, the film's plot, which hints at a time-travelling adventure entertainer, has been updated on Letterboxd, a popular social networking site and app for film lovers.
During the film's title announcement in November 2025, the makers unveiled a three-minute glimpse that took audiences through different continents and timelines. From Tretayuga to Kaliyuga, from Antarctica to Africa, the story of Varanasi spans various places and eras.
The film's Letterboxd synopsis hints at a possible storyline. It reads, "When an asteroid hits the city of Varanasi in India, what are the events that it leads to? Is the world about to be doomed? Does it need a saviour who has to traverse across the continents and timelines to influence the most crucial moment in the history of Earth?"
Varanasi's official synopsis states, "It takes place over thousands of years and in locations around the world from Antarctica to Africa to the titular city in India. It is in the vein of Indiana Jones and James Bond."
Recently, cryptic billboards with the words "In theatres - April 7, 2027" have been put up across the city of Varanasi, seemingly indicating the film's release date.
Director SS Rajamouli's Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran, is tipped to be one of the biggest Indian films ever made. While Mahesh Babu plays the role of Rudhra, Priyanka and Prithviraj will be seen as Mandakini and Kumbha, respectively.
