The Railway Board has announced new trains, additional stoppages, and an increase in the frequency of a few trains in Tamil Nadu.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday (March 6, 2026) said four new trains will be introduced in the State — a mainline electrical multiple unit (MEMU) train from Palakkad to Pollachi, Mayiladuthurai-Karaikudi passenger, Amrit Bharat Express from Podanur to Dhanbad, and the Mangaluru-Tirunelveli express train.
The Union Minister has also sanctioned increasing the frequency of the Tiruchirapalli-Karaikudi and Karaikudi-Virudhunagar passenger trains into daily service from the present six days a week. Also, the MGR Chennai Central-Bodinayakanur express operated as a tri-weekly service would be operated as six days a week.
The Mangaluru Central-Rameswaram express train would have additional stoppages at Tirur, Udumalaipettai and Paramakudi stations and the Tambaram-Rameswaram express train would have an additional stop at Panruti station.
The introduction of the new train services have been welcomed by railway activists and passengers from the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, particularly the Mayiladuthurai-Karaikudi and the Amrit Bharat Express Dhanbad-Podanur services.
K. Pandiaraja, former member of Zonal Railway Users Consultative Committee and a resident of Tenkasi, said the Karaikudi-Mayiladuthurai train service linking Pattukottai and Thiruvarur, has been a long pending demand which has finally come to fruition. Regarding the Amrit Bharat Express service from Podanur to Dhanbad, the railway activist said the service would help in providing train services for migrant workers to reach Coimbatore district for commercial activities.
