DMK prepares for a major rally in Tiruchi, with Stalin launching the election campaign at the 12th State conference.
With the seat-sharing arrangement among the constituents of the Secular Progressive Alliance expected to be finalised over the next few days, the DMK is gearing up for a massive show of strength ahead of the Assembly election at its 12th State conference here on Monday (March 9).
Tiruchi will be the party’s election launchpad yet again as DMK president and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is expected to kick off the election campaign from the sprawling ground that is being readied at Siruganur, on the outskirts of the city along the Chennai-Tiruchi National Highway. Mr. Stalin hit the campaign trail from Siruganur ahead of the 2021 Assembly election too.
For the DMK, party conferences held in Tiruchi are often projected as “turning points” and the electoral success that had followed some of the meets had helped nurture and sustain the sentiment.
Tiruchi has a special place in the annals of the DMK as it was at the second State conference held here in 1956 that the party took the decision of entering the electoral politics. Subsequently, many of the party’s State conferences have been held in the city.
The party’s state conferences were held in the city in 1990, 1996, 2006, and 2014 too. In 2021, it was at Siruganur that Mr. Stalin unveiled his 10-year vision statement for development of Tamil Nadu and promised the monthly honorarium for housewives at a massive State-level meet.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, DMK principal secretary and Municipal Administration Minister K.N. Nehru, who is overseeing the arrangements for the conference, too pointed out that Mr. Stalin had unveiled the vision plan identifying seven priority areas. “Everyone is aware how his announcements have been implemented,” he said.
