Two men arrested in Chennai for cheating a businessman of ₹4.62 crore in a fraudulent land deal scheme.
The Central Crime Branch (CCB) of Tambaram City Police arrested two men for allegedly cheating a businessman of ₹4.62 crore by promising to arrange large extents of agricultural land to buy.
The police said the accused, Harikrishnan, 56, of Anumanthapuram, and Raghupathi, 59, of Adyar in Chennai, had conspired to cheat the complainant, a businessman from Adyar. They claimed that they could arrange around 100 acres of agricultural land in areas under Maraimalai Nagar taluk and Anumanthapuram village by purchasing it from various landowners and transferring it to him.
Believing their claims, the complainant entered into two agreements on June 25, 2023, and April 8, 2024, and transferred a total of ₹4.62 crore to different bank accounts of the accused. However, the accused neither arranged the land nor returned the money, thereby cheating him, according to the complaint.
Based on the complaint, Tambaram Central Crime Branch police registered a case on Wednesday (March 11, 2026) and began an investigation. Following orders from Tambaram City Police Commissioner A. Amalraj, a special team was formed to trace the suspects. The police arrested Harikrishnan and Raghupathi.
During interrogation, the accused reportedly confessed to the offence. They were produced before the concerned court and remanded to judicial custody. The police also warned that strict legal action will continue against those who collect money illegally in the name of real estate deals.
