TVK leader Sengottaiyan announces plans to contest Gobichettipalayam Assembly seat and supports party founder Vijay amid controversies.
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) high-level administrative committee chief coordinator K.A. Sengottaiyan on Wednesday (February 4, 2026) said he would file his application (viruppa manu) on February 6 to contest from the Gobichettipalayam Assembly constituency in the forthcoming Assembly elections.
He was speaking to reporters after inaugurating the party’s new office at Vellankovil near Gobichettipalayam. Mr. Sengottaiyan said that at the Rasipuram meeting, AIADMK cadres themselves held TVK flags, and that it was incorrect to claim that TVK cadres had come there.
Responding to criticism over party founder Vijay dancing at the party’s third anniversary celebrations, Mr. Sengottaiyan said Mr. Vijay had danced only after being requested to do so during the rendition of a Murugan devotional song. He questioned why similar scrutiny was not applied to other political leaders. He reiterated that he would continue to stand by Mr. Vijay and said an announcement on the next phase of the party’s tour would be made within two days.
Referring to allegations by AIADMK leader Dindigul Srinivasan that Mr. Vijay had accepted black money, Mr. Sengottaiyan said such claims must be substantiated with evidence and cautioned against making baseless statements. On whether the TVK would contest the elections independently, he said the matter remained open and added that “silence is a sign of victory.”
Reacting to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s reported remark that the TVK would not dent the BJP’s vote bank but would impact the DMK, Mr. Sengottaiyan expressed confidence that the TVK would win the 2026 Assembly elections. He said the election results would reveal who feared the party, who its real competitors were, and whose vote base was eroding.
