TN girl suicide: State BJP chief welcomes HC order, says police investigation did not inspire confidence

Tamil Nadu BJP chief Annamalai welcomed the Madras High Court order transferring the Thanjavur girl suicide case to CBI. He said state police investigation did not inspire confidence.

Tamil Nadu BJP chief Annamalai said the way state police acted with regards to the Thanjavur suicide case did not 'inspire any confidence' as Madras High Court transferred the case to CBI.

"We have trust in the state police, but the way they responded over 10 days did not inspire confidence. The Madras High Court has taken the right decision to transfer the case. Let the truth come out," Annamalai said.

The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Monday transferred the case to the CBI and observed that leaked materials related to the case did not inspire confidence in the state. The high court was hearing a petition filed by the girl's father accusing the police of leaking videos related to the case.

A Class 12 student was allegedly forced to clean rooms in her hostel in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur and forced to take up Christianity. She was admitted to a hospital after she consumed pesticide. She died on Wednesday, January 19, after not responding to treatment.

The warden was arrested but the Tamil Nadu state education department ruled out the religious conversion angle. According to their report, District Education Officers have visited the school 16 times since 2010 and they have not found any student raising complaints about religious conversion.
