Tiruchi Government Museum secures ₹95 lakh for second phase renovations, enhancing its historic exhibits and visitor experience.
The second phase of Tiruchi Government Museum, housed in the Rani Mangamma Kolu Mandapam, is set to begin soon.
A senior museum official told The Hindu that ₹95 lakh has been sanctioned as the second tranche to complete the pending repair and civic work on the building. The museum has been closed to visitors since 2024 because of the conservation work executed there.
“The funds will be used to finish the incomplete work of the first phase. We will be cleaning the roof, repairing the doors and windows, and painting the dome, among other tasks in the second phase. The display areas and electrification of the museum will be taken up in the third phase,” the official said.
The palace was built by Chokkanatha Nayak in the year 1666 and served as a Durbar Hall of Madurai Nayaks when Tiruchi was their capital. Several murals, obscured by at least 20 layers of limestone and paint, were discovered during the first phase of renovation.
The Government Museum in Tiruchi was started in 1983 and began to function in a rented building in the Cantonment area, before it was shifted to Rani Mangamma Kolu Mandapam in 1997.
In 2024, the State government had announced the construction of a museum building with modern facilities in Panjapur.
