A new CNG filling station at Nagapattinam's SETC depot promotes green transport and reduces emissions for public buses and vehicles.
A compressed natural gas (CNG) filling station was inaugurated at the State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) depot in Nagapattinam on Friday.
Inaugurating the facility, Managing Director of the Tamil Nadu State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) Mohan said the station had been established jointly by SETC and Torrent Gas with the objective of promoting green transport initiatives in Tamil Nadu.
He said that public transport buses would gradually shift from diesel to compressed natural gas (CNG), resulting in improved mileage, reduced fuel expenditure and lower carbon emissions. In the initial phase, around 70 buses would be operated using CNG.
The new online CNG station would ease refuelling for buses at the depot and significantly reduce vehicular emissions, contributing to improved air quality in the State. In addition to government buses, the facility would cater to private vehicles, commercial vehicles and other public transport services.
CNG is a compressed form of natural gas, primarily consisting of methane along with small quantities of other hydrocarbons. It is stored at high pressure, enabling a greater quantity of fuel to be filled in vehicle cylinders.
Mr. Mohan said SETC and Torrent Gas would continue to expand safe and efficient green energy infrastructure across the State.
