The Tiruchi Corporation has planned to carry out a special drive to clear encroachments on major roads around the Central Bus Stand and Cantonment area to ensure free flow of traffic.
Following complaints from residents and road safety activists, the Corporation is planning to intensify its crackdown on encroachments to free up space for pedestrians.
The drive would be carried out on Reynolds Road, Royal Road, Rockins Road, Williams Road, McDonalds Road, Warners Road, VOC Road, and Heber Road, falling under Zone IV of Tiruchi Corporation.
A team of Corporation workers, with the support of city police, will seize properties belonging to unauthorised makeshift eateries, fruit shops, juice stalls, mobile clothing stores, and ice cream outlets that had encroached pavements, storm-water drains, and the carriageway.
These encroachments have been obstructing pedestrian and vehicular movement around the Central Bus Stand, especially after the closure of the overbridge near the Railway Junction.
Frequent traffic snarls were reported near the Central Bus Stand because of the encroachments by eateries, most of which operate at night. Several mobile eateries had mushroomed along the roads leading to the Central Bus Stand, hindering public movement.
Earlier, the civic body had instructed the vendors to relocate their pushcarts and mobile eateries to cross streets instead of encroaching on the bus route roads.
