Thoothukudi Municipal Corporation is set to develop additional parks, especially for women and senior citizens, in the city.
While the city already has a notable number of parks across various zones, civic officials say the initiative aims to provide inclusive spaces for the public, considering that Thoothukudi city has limited recreational options beyond parks and beaches.
As part of the initiative, the corporation has been actively developing many parks across the city, offering residents well-maintained green spaces, walking areas and other facilities. Many of the parks were developed under Smart Cities Mission and Atal Mission Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT).
Some of the notable parks in the city include Roche park, MGR park, Rajaji park, Anthropological park, Pink park for women, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) park, and Aayiram Pirai park, which is designated for senior citizens.
However, residents have mixed reactions about the initiatives, with some appreciating the efforts and others having concerns over maintenance of the old parks.
“Earlier, the city had very few parks and almost everyone relied on Beach Road for walking and Roche park for recreational activities. But now the availability of multiple parks makes it more convenient for joggers and walkers. Even families have outdoor spaces to enjoy the evening,” said Shanmugam, a resident from Thoothukudi.
Meanwhile, Aayiram Pirai park in P&T colony, which caters to elders, has been well-received among the public. Many NGOs operating old age homes in the city choose to bring their residents to the park during outings. Additionally, the corporation has also arranged for a psychiatrist to visit the park thrice a week to offer counselling and therapy sessions for the elderly.
