The Mummy 4 release date out: Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz to return after 20 years

The Mummy 4 release date out: Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz to return after 20 years

The Mummy 4 is officially in the works, with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz returning as Rick O'Connell and Evelyn Carnahan after nearly 20 years.

After nearly two decades, The Mummy franchise is set to return to the big screen with a fourth installment, bringing back fan-favourite duo Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz for another thrilling adventure. As announced by Universal Pictures, the film is scheduled for release on May 19, 2028. It will see the actors reprise their iconic roles as Rick O’Connell and Evelyn Carnahan, rekindling nostalgia among longtime fans.

While specific plot details for The Mummy 4 are still under wraps, the announcement alone has generated excitement, given the massive popularity of the earlier films. The franchise originally began in 1932 with Karl Freund’s The Mummy and went on to spawn multiple sequels and reboots over the decades. However, it was the 1999 remake starring Fraser and Weisz that created a distinct global fanbase with its blend of action, humour, and supernatural thrills.

A post shared by Universal Pictures (@universalpictures)

Directed by Stephen Sommers, the 1999 film followed librarian Evelyn Carnahan and her brother Jonathan as they enlisted adventurer Rick O’Connell to help locate the legendary City of the Dead, Hamunaptra. Their expedition took a dangerous turn when Evelyn accidentally awakened the cursed priest Imhotep after reading from the Book of the Dead.

The success of the film led to the 2001 sequel, The Mummy Returns, where Rick and Evelyn faced a cult attempting to resurrect Imhotep. Their mission soon spiralled into chaos with their son’s kidnapping and the emergence of new threats, including the Scorpion King and the fearsome army of Anubis.

The third installment, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), shifted gears by introducing Maria Bello as Evelyn while focusing on Rick’s family battling a resurrected Chinese emperor. Despite the change in casting, the film expanded the franchise’s mythology and kept audiences invested in the adventurous universe.
