Telangana Government withdraws pharma village proposal in Lagacherla, opts for multi-purpose industrial park instead after protests.

In a major development, Telangana Government has withdrawn its proposal to establish a pharma village at Lagacherla in Vikarabad district.

The Government has announced that it will instead set up a multi-purpose industrial park in the area part of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s native Kodangal assembly constituency. Accordingly, the Vikarabad district administration has appointed Tandur sub-collector as nodal officer for acquiring the land for establishment of multi-purpose industrial park in the area instead of a pharma village.

The decision comes in the light of protests lodged by the villagers against acquisition of land for the purpose which turned violent. Earlier, the Government had notified acquisition of 632 acres and 26 guntas of land in Lagacherla village and senior officials led by Vikarabad district collector Prateek Jain visited the village on November 11, 2024 to negotiate with the residents for acquisition of the required land.

The event however, saw vociferous protests by the residents culminating in the attack on the district collector and other senior officials who accompanied him. The issue took political turn with the ruling Congress charging the Opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) of instigating violence through some of people affiliated to it.

An inquiry had been ordered into the issue and the Government embarked upon analysing the call data records of the suspects in a bid to prove its charge that the main opposition was behind the incidents in the otherwise peaceful villages. Days after the development, the Chief Minister had announced that the Government planned to set up a multi-purpose industrial park in the area, not a pharma village.

The Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC) had withdrawn the earlier proposals and submitted fresh requisition proposals for acquiring land for setting up a multi-purpose industrial park in place of the pharma village in the area.
