The CJI NV Ramana said that he strongly proposes reservations for women in legal education at a Supreme Court programme.
Speaking at a Supreme Court programme commemorating the first 'International Day of Women Judges', Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana strongly proposed reservations for women in legal education to enrich the talent pool. He added that such a provision has led to 'encouraging results' for the appointment of women judicial officers at the district level.
Telangana has 52 percent female judicial officers, Assam has 46 percent, Andhra Pradesh has 45 percent, Odisha has 42 percent, and Rajasthan has 40 percent female judicial officers, added the CJI.
"I strongly feel that the policy of providing reservations for women needs to be replicated at all levels and in all the states," the CJI said further.
Speaking at the event organised by women's advocates, he quoted Karl Marx and said, "Women of the world, unite; you have nothing to lose but your chains."
"That call of mine was sought to be projected as instigating a revolution. If giving women their due share is a revolution, I would be very happy to be branded as a revolutionary," he added.
"I wholeheartedly welcome such a revolution," he said further.
Chief Justice NV Ramana further said that there are four women judges in the Supreme Court currently, which is the highest ever in history.
