Dario Amodei says Anthropic will not need many software engineers soon, not sure if AI will create more jobs
India Today
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei discussed the potential consequences of AI on the job market. He also stated that Anthropic itself may not require as many software engineers as it has at the moment.
AI is changing everything. And in particular, the job market. More companies are relying on AI in a bid to improve productivity in exchange for reduced headcount. Now, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has stated that further disruption was inevitable.
While there have been concerns around the future of software engineers already, Anthropic’s Claude Cowork has also raised fears that SaaS companies such as TCS and Infosys may be fully replaced by AI in the future.
During the India AI Impact Summit, Dario Amodei told CNBC TV18, “I think there's going to be some disruption, not related to any particular company or particular industry.” He added, “but we relate to the technology in general.”
Dario reckoned that even AI firms may see a time when they wouldn’t need big workforces. He explained, “[In the future] even within, Anthropic, we would need less software engineers than we have today, because the models are better at automating software engineering end to end.”
Now, this may seem like a big crisis, but Amodei insists that new job opportunities will come about. The Anthropic chief stated, “There's this notion of the forward deployed engineer, someone who has technical skills but who works with customers to enable technical systems.” The AI startup may need a lot of such personnel in the future as the company grows, according to Amodei.
He added, “That's one possible example where one thing goes away, you know, and but another door opens to take its place.”
