Tiruchi Corporation's weekly drive clears roadside garden waste, promoting cleanliness and preventing open burning across the city.
Tiruchi Corporation has launched a special drive to remove garden waste dumped on roadsides and vacant sites across the city to prevent open burning of such waste.
According to Corporation officials, with the dry season setting in, heaps of tree debris and dried leaves are found on the streets and in empty plots.
To tackle the issue, the civic body has deployed sanitation workers and garbage collection vehicles, including excavators, to collect the waste from various wards. Officials said the special drive was being undertaken every Wednesday.
On an average, around 200 trips are carried out, collecting nearly 70 to 100 tonnes of garden waste daily from different parts of the city. The drive will focus on clearing waste dumped on vacant plots, which are often misused as dumping grounds by residents.
An official said awareness must be created among residents to avoid burning garden waste, which contributes to air pollution. Residents have been advised not to burn waste and instead hand it over to sanitation workers during the scheduled collection.
Authorities have urged property owners to maintain vacant sites and ensure that they are not used as dumping grounds. The Corporation has warned that strict action will be taken against those found dumping waste in public places.
