The death of a boy post-surgery at KGH sparks allegations of medical negligence and heated disputes with hospital authorities.
The death of a six-year-old boy who underwent a surgical procedure for a fractured leg at King George Hospital (KGH) triggered a row, with the hospital authorities and kin of the deceased supported by leaders of opposition parties exchanging heated arguments on Monday.
The boy, V. Akshay Kumar from Sitampeta, died on Sunday morning.
The kin of the boy alleged medical negligence while the hospital administration denied the allegations. The issue also reached District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad during the weekly-grievance programme on Monday.
An official statement issued by the hospital on Monday said that the boy was admitted to the KGH on March 3 after sustaining a fracture in his right leg from a fall. Following a Titanium Elastic Nailing System (TENS) surgery performed on March 5, the child’s condition deteriorated rapidly. Clinical notes indicate that he developed a high fever and seizures shortly after being moved to the post-operative ward. Despite being placed on a ventilator support and receiving attention from a multidisciplinary team of specialists, the child died at 8.25 a.m. on Sunday.
“We have formed a four-member committee to ascertain the reasons behind the death. The committee will submit a report within 48 hours. A complaint has also been made to the Visakhapatnam Collector,” KGH Superintendent Dr. I. Vani told The Hindu on Monday.
Former MLA Vasupalli Ganesh Kumar met the bereaved family at the hospital on Monday and attributed the death to ‘failure of doctors’. He sought a government compensation of ₹20 lakh for the bereaved family.
