
‘Sleep is disturbed’: Allahabad University VC writes to DM objecting to azaan on loudspeaker

In a letter to the District Magistrate, Allahabad University’s vice-chancellor Prof Sangita Srivastava said her “sleep is disturbed due to loud azaan” every morning.
A letter written by Allahabad University’s vice-chancellor Prof Sangita Srivastava to the district magistrate is making waves. Srivastava has complained over blaring of azaan from nearby mosque on loudspeaker. She said her “sleep is disturbed due to loud azaan” every morning. Referring to an Allahabad High Court judgment, Srivastava said action be taken to prevent the concerned mosque from using loudspeaker for azaan. In her letter, Srivastava said, “ every day in the morning at about 5.30 am, my sleep is disturbed due to loud Azan done on the mike by the Maulvi in the surrounding mosque. The sleep so disturbed does not resume even after trying very hard. This also results in a headache, throughout the day, causing losses in work hours (sic).”
As per the Bill, those involved in unlawful conversions on the pretext of marriage will be punished with imprisonment of seven years and shall also be liable for a fine of Rs 1 lakh. Violations in respect of a minor, a person of unsound mind, a woman or a person belonging to the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe will be punished with imprisonment of seven years and a fine of Rs 5 lakh.
