'Should abide by state cabinet’s advice': Kerala CM hits out at governor after press conference

After the governor's press conference at Raj Bhavan, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday hit out at Governor Arif Mohammed Khan and said that he should abide by the state cabinet's advice.

After the Kerala governor’s controversial press conference on Monday, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday hit out at Governor Arif Mohammed Khan and said, “The governor should abide by the advice of the state cabinet, which is what the Constitution demands.”

"The governor's post refrains him from showing allegiance towards political organisations," Vijayan told the media.

He further added, "The governor was speaking about the incidents that took place in Kannur during the Indian History Congress three years ago. There were widespread protests across the country against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act at that time. Some representatives protested when he spoke in favour of CAA," the CM said.

He also said that in most states, the clashes between governors and the state governments are mainly based on the Vice-Chancellor appointments in universities. "Tamil Nadu, Bengal, Rajasthan - in all these states, governors are being used to appoint VCs with Sangh Parivar relations," Vijayan said.

He also made remarks at the governor's meeting in Thrissur with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief, Mohan Bhagwat and said, "He is trying to create the universities as experimental factories for certain particular agendas. We won't allow this to happen to universities.”

The chief minister mentioned that his government doesn't need to pressurize the governor and get benefits. "It is a challenge to the Constitution that the governor is refusing to sign bills without even reading them."
