Groups on Prince Edward Island that work toward gender equality have a new fundraising opportunity called Shifting Sands.
The initiative is being led by the United Way of P.E.I., and is a partnership with the Chair's Circle for Gender Equality.
Shifting Sands aims to address the rising demand and unstable funding for organizations advancing gender equality on the Island.
Treena Smith is the executive director of the United Way of P.E.I.
"It's about creating stability for, and long-term sustainability for the sector."
Smith said the fundraiser has a goal of $50,000 and she hopes that will be reached by the end of March.
"That would enable us to fund at least one organization for a year. And obviously the more money we raise, the more agencies we're able to fund, and the more support we're able to offer for the sector."
Smith said organizations that want funding will have to apply and show how they contribute to the community.
"We have a community impact council that is created of just local folks in the community. And one of the people on the committee is from the Chair's Circle for Gender Equality," she said.
"And really, we look at a number of different factors, right. We look at the need, we look at the number of people served. Sometimes we look at even, if it's not a great number, how they're being served and what the outcomes are for those organizations."
Mari Basiletti was the former chairperson for the P.E.I. Advisory Council on the Status of Women and represents the Chair's Circle for Gender Equality. She said there are a few organizations working toward equality that are functioning with unstable income.
"The Women's Network is one, the Coalition for Women's Leadership, and there are several others," she said.
"I would say there are four or five different groups that are working towards equality who are often going from grant to grant looking for the money to run their programs."
Basiletti said in the past she has worked towards advancing equality, though work still needs to be done.
