Amanda Seyfried's "The Testament of Ann Lee" for which she received a Golden Globe nomination, will soon be available digitally.
Based on the true legend of the founder of the devotional sect known as the Shakers, the film traces the life of Lee, who after losing four children in infancy, became celibate and created a religious movement based in music and dayslong dance rituals. She was regarded as the female Christ by her followers but accused of witchcraft by outsiders.
Searchlight Pictures described Seyfried's Lee as the sect’s "revered, irrepressible leader who preaches gender and social equality."
"With reimagined Shaker hymns, the film captures Lee’s ecstasy and agony in her quest to build a utopia," the film's synopsis says.
