Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday said that the much anticipated second phase work of Mangaluru Central Prison, coming up near Mudipu, will be taken up during 2026-27.
The State Government took up building new prison, as the present Mangaluru District prison had become overcrowded and incidents of fights between inmates, attacks on personnel, murder of an inmate were reported.
The Government spent ₹ 110 crore for the first phase of construction of new high security Mangaluru Central prison, with a capacity for 1000 prisoners. In the second phase, it was proposed to construct compound wall, quarters for prison staff, and some additional infrastructure facilities, necessary to shift inmates from the District Prison to the new prison on the outskirts of the city.
With residents around the district prison being affected with operation of mobile signal jammers installed inside the prison, demand has been growing on the government to complete the construction of the new prison at the earliest.
