The Supreme Court on Thursday directed Punjab Police not to arrest for one week the Lok Insaaf Party MLA Simarjit Singh Bains, who is facing an arrest warrant in connection with a rape case.

The top court also rapped the Punjab government and Bains over multiple cases filed against the woman who accused the legislator of rape. As many as four criminal cases have been lodged against the complainant after she lodged the rape FIR,
The bench also stayed all proceedings against Bains and the alleged rape victim.
It further directed the Punjab Police, Bains and the complainant woman to file replies in the matter before the next date of hearing.
The matter will be taken up for hearing next week.

Simarjit Singh Bains represents the Atam Nagar assembly seat in the Ludhiana district of Punjab. He had filed a plea in the Supreme Court against an order of the Punjab and Haryana by which it did not stay the trial court’s non-bailable warrants issued against him in the rape case.
