SA vs NZ: In Aiden Markram's clarity, South Africa find balance in T20 World Cup
India Today
Undefeated South Africa play New Zealand in the first semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2026. South Africa's charge in this tournament has been led by Aiden Markram, who is enjoying the absolute peak of his batting form and captaincy.
"Is this the best that you have batted in T20Is?" Aiden Markram was asked in the pre-match press conference ahead of South Africa's semi-final against New Zealand in the T20 World Cup. Ever shy of admitting his own brilliance, Markram smiled in acknowledgement. He wanted to skip the question, but could not.
"Opening the batting now in T20 cricket, you don't really have a choice. You have to get on with things and take the game to the opposition, try to get the team off to a really strong powerplay, and that's pretty much what I've just tried to focus on," Markram said at the Eden Gardens.
The South Africa captain has led the charge in the T20 World Cup 2026, hitting 268 runs at a strike rate of 175. The way Markram has been batting, it almost seems as if he is hell-bent on ending South Africa's trophy drought in ICC white-ball tournaments, where the Rainbow Nation has been winless since 1998.
There are several changes that Aiden Markram has had to make to unleash his best. Earlier, he played as a grafter in the side, a role somewhat akin to Virat Kohli's in the Indian team - anchoring the innings and batting deep. On the biggest stage of all, in the T20 World Cup 2024 final, Markram faltered, getting out for 4 off 5 balls to Arshdeep Singh and putting the Proteas under immediate pressure in a tricky run-chase.
That night perhaps hurt the batter more than he let on.
Quinton de Kock had told the press in Ahmedabad earlier that none of the South Africa players spoke about the T20 World Cup 2024 final loss to India. Everyone went about their processes to deal with it and looked inward to understand what had gone wrong.
