
Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, gets new chief

Sivananda Damodara Pai appointed head of RMC Chennai, known for advancing seasonal rainfall and temperature forecasting models.
Sivananda Damodara Pai, Scientist ‘G’, assumed charge as the Head of the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, on Thursday.
Mr. Pai, who joined the Indian Meteorological Service in November 1992, has contributed extensively to research and operational weather and climate services and held several key positions in the India Meteorological Department (IMD). He previously served as Programme Director, Ministry of Earth Sciences, and headed the Agromet Advisory Division of IMD, New Delhi.
Mr. Pai has published about 80 research papers and 25 technical reports and his major contributions include the development of operational models for seasonal rainfall and temperature forecasting, Southwest monsoon onset prediction over Kerala, computation of latest normal dates of monsoon onset, and the withdrawal and development of high-resolution gridded datasets for India, the release said.
