Ranbir's Ramayana looks grand, but avoid Adipurush mistakes: Vindu Dara Singh
India Today
After the Adipurush backlash, Vindu Dara Singh reacted to Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana. While he praised the teaser as spectacular, he warned that any major deviation from Ramanand Sagar's classic could alienate audiences.
After the backlash around Adipurush, any new retelling of the epic is bound to be under the scanner, and Vindu Dara Singh is already sounding a note of caution. Reacting to the first glimpse of Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, starring Ranbir Kapoor, the actor called the teaser “spectacular”, but warned that even slight deviations from the original could risk audience rejection.
Vindu, whose father Dara Singh immortalised Hanuman in Ramayan, shared his thoughts after watching the teaser. Speaking to DNA, he emphasised that Ramanand Sagar’s version continues to hold an unmatched place in the public imagination.
“It looks spectacular, very beautiful. But there is a strict rule. Jo Ramayan Ramanand Sagar ji ki bane hai, woh hum sabke dil-o-dimaag poori fit hai. Woh jo Ramayan hai, woh historic hai, number one hai. Agar yeh picture uske saath match ho gayi, then it will be superhit. It will be a record-breaking hit. Kuch bhi deviation agar ki, jaise is mein woh khatarnaak (asur) se dikh rahe hai, toh agar zyada upar-neeche kiya (The Ramayan made by Ramanand Sagar ji is deeply ingrained in all our hearts and minds. It is historic, number one. If this film matches that, it will be a superhit – a record-breaking hit. But any deviation, like showing characters as dangerous or asura-like, if changed too much, people will not accept it)," he said.
He further cautioned that reinterpretations of key characters must be handled with care, as even minor shifts in tone or portrayal could alienate audiences deeply attached to the original narrative.
Drawing a sharp comparison with Adipurush, Vindu said Tiwari’s Ramayana already appears far more promising – but stressed that lessons must be learnt. “Yeh jitna bhi dekha hai, usse to bahut better lag rahi hai. Woh toh pata nahi kya tha. Main trailer dekh ke samaj gaya tha ki yeh flop hogi. Kya hi chal raha tha. You can’t deviate so much and have Hanuman ji saying all these dialogues (From whatever I’ve seen so far, this looks much better. I didn’t even understand what that was. I knew from the trailer itself that it would flop. What was going on? You can’t deviate so much, especially with characters like Hanuman), he noted.
