India Today
Rajpal Yadav opened up about his disciplined life in Tihar Jail. Speaking about his ongoing struggles, he thanked the film fraternity, adding that he looked forward to his upcoming film, Bhooth Bangla.
Actor Rajpal Yadav recently shared his experiences during his time in Tihar Jail, in a conversation with filmmaker and choreographer Farah Khan. He spoke about the discipline required to stay in jail and expressed gratitude for the support he received from fellow actors and filmmakers during this challenging period.
While appearing on Farah Khan’s vlog, Rajpal Yadav prepared mixed vegetable rice, a dish he recalled making during his struggling days in Mumbai when he lived with many others. When asked if he was assigned any duties in jail, he clarified that the situation never escalated to that point. However, he emphasised the strict discipline required to serve time properly in Tihar.
Yadav said, “Voh naubat nahi thi, lekin bahut discipline se rehna tha vahan pe aur proper time kaatna tha (Matters didn't reach that point, but one had to stay very disciplined there and serve the time properly)." He added, "Maine har condition mein jeena seekh liya hai (I have learnt to live in every condition).”
The actor also acknowledged the financial and moral support he received from the film fraternity. Actor Sonu Sood was among the first to publicly support Rajpal, urging filmmakers to offer him work with small signing amounts to help him repay his debts. Others, including Salman Khan, David Dhawan and Priyadarshan, reportedly extended their help as well.
In February this year, Yadav surrendered to authorities and was sent to Tihar Jail in connection with a Rs 9 crore debt and cheque bounce case. He was granted interim bail on February 16 after depositing Rs 1.5 crore.
The case dates back to 2010 when Yadav took a Rs 5-crore loan from a Delhi-based company to finance his directorial debut, Ata Pata Laapata. The film’s failure led to financial losses and a legal dispute. In 2018, a court convicted him in a cheque bounce case and sentenced him to six months in jail. The total liability increased to nearly Rs 9 crore after the verdict was upheld in 2019.
