Tensions prevailed in Andhra Pradesh's Amalapuram town after hundreds gathered to protest against the government decision to rename a district after Ambedkar.
Hundreds of protesters gathered in Andhra Pradesh's Amalapuram town, despite police curbs, to protest against the state government’s proposal to name the district as BR Ambedkar Konaseema district.
The YSRCP-led government had taken the decision following demands from various Dalit groups.
Protesters demanded that the name of the town be kept the same. In anticipation of the rally, the district police had imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC.
The police had to resort to the use of mild force to disperse the protesters. Sporadic incidents of stone pelting were also reported in the town. DSP Madhavreddy and SP's gunman were injured in the ruckus.
State Home Minister Taneti Vanitha said, "Around 20 policemen were injured in the incident. We condemn the violence. All political parties wanted the renaming of the district. I appeal for peace."
Besides, a residence of Pinepi Viswaroop who represents Amalapuram Assembly constituency was set afair by protesters. A total of three cars belonging to the minister were also set on fire.
SP Subbareddy held a security review meeting soon after the incident and a few protesters were taken into custody.
