Princess Kate is celebrating St. Patrick's Day in all shades of green.
The senior royal, 44, stepped out to celebrate the holiday on Tuesday, March 17, with the Irish Guards, a regiment of the British army. Kate was named the honorary colonel of the guards in 2022 and sat alongside them at the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Mons Barracks. The position was previously held by her husband, Prince William.
To honor the holiday's signature green hue, Kate donned a forest green hat with a bow, slightly tipped to the side. She paired it with a belted trench in the same color and a decorative sprig of shamrock pinned to her lapel.
St. Patrick is remembered as the patron saint of Ireland because he is credited with bringing Christianity to the country. (Though he is called Saint Patrick, he was never canonized, but gained the honorific through grass roots public support, according to History.com.)
St. Patrick is believed to have died on March 17, around A.D. 460, according to History.com. March 17 became a holiday in the mid-17th century when Luke Wadding, a Franciscan friar from Waterford based in Rome, added St. Patrick’s Day to Rome’s liturgical calendar, according to the National Catholic Reporter.
