Primary schools in two wards of Jamtara are giving weekly holidays on Fridays instead of Sundays to the students. These wards have a majority of the Muslim population.
Students of primary schools in two wards of the Jamtara district, Jharkhand, are being given holidays on Fridays instead of Sundays, citing the Muslim population in such schools.
This is being done in the primary schools operated in villages with a majority of the Muslim population - Karmatand and Narayanpur.
Students from other castes also study in these schools. However, 70 per cent of students come from Muslim families. One of the main reasons for closing schools on Friday is because the Muslims offer Friday prayers.
The change in weekly holiday is also mentioned on the notice boards of these schools.

However, due to pressure from the Village Education Committee and the local people, dozens of other schools were also allegedly notified as Urdu schools. In this matter, the teachers of the school shied away from commenting.
