Lok Sabha MP Kanimozhi launches pilot project for infant hearing screening in Thoothukudi to address global health issue.
“According to the World Health Organisation, hearing impairment will become a major global health issue in the next 20 years. Currently, in India six out of thousand children are born with hearing disabilities,” said Lok Sabha MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi at the launch of the pilot project of infants hearing screening programme in Thoothukudi on Friday.
The project was launched at the Thoothukudi Government Medical College and Hospital by the Thoothukudi District Health Society in partnership with Hearing for Life Foundation.
At the inaugural event, Ms Kanimozhi said that “For the first time in Tamil Nadu, a pilot programme for infant hearing impairment has been launched in Thoothukudi.” She added that the early detection of hearing impairment at birth can enable timely treatment and improve the child’s hearing ability.
She further mentioned that a memorandum of understanding has been signed to continue the screening programme at the Thoothukudi Government Medical College and Hospital. Additionally, special screening programmes have been initiated at the government district headquarters hospitals in Kovilpatti and Tiruchendur.
Highlighting the critical issue, she said that India has six times more hearing impaired new-borns compared to other countries with Tamil Nadu recording higher cases of congenital hearing impairments, as consanguineous marriages are a significant contributor to this issue.
She emphasised that projects like this would ensure that in future no child born here will suffer from hearing impairment.
District Collector K. Elambahavath, Minister of Social Welfare P. Geetha Jeevan, Thoothukudi Government Medical College Dean G. Sivakumar and other officials were present at the event.
