Paul Dano expresses gratitude for support after Quentin Tarantino's criticism of his performance in 'There Will Be Blood.'
Paul Dano has commented publicly for the first time on Quentin Tarantino’s recent criticism of his performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood, saying he was thankful that widespread support from peers and fans allowed him to remain silent.
Speaking ahead of a 20th anniversary screening of Little Miss Sunshine at the Sundance Film Festival, Dano acknowledged the reaction to Tarantino’s remarks, which were made during a podcast appearance earlier this year. Tarantino had described Dano as the “weakest” performer in the Screen Actors Guild while discussing why There Will Be Blood did not rank higher on his personal list of favorite films of the century.
Dano said he chose not to respond at the time, noting that the outpouring of defense from fellow actors, filmmakers, and audiences was meaningful. “That was really nice,” he said. “I was incredibly grateful that the world spoke up for me so I didn’t have to.”
During the Sundance event, Dano’s Little Miss Sunshine co-star Toni Collette reacted forcefully when asked about the comments, dismissing Tarantino’s criticism and questioning the need for such remarks. Directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris also defended Dano, describing Tarantino’s comments as unnecessary and pointing to the complexity and restraint of Dano’s performance.
Tarantino’s comments, made while ranking films of the 21st century, sparked backlash across the industry. While praising Daniel Day-Lewis’ lead performance, he argued that the dynamic between the two characters did not work for him. His remarks also included dismissive comments about other actors, including Owen Wilson and Matthew Lillard, prompting further criticism.
Since the controversy, several high-profile figures have publicly praised Dano’s work. George Clooney, among others, said he would welcome the opportunity to work with the actor. Dano, whose career includes acclaimed roles in Little Miss Sunshine, There Will Be Blood, and The Batman, appeared unfazed by the episode, as the film community continues to reassess Tarantino’s comments.
