Pagani debuts the Utopia with 852bhp
India Today
The Utopia is only the third model to come from the Italian marque and comes with a no-fuss twin-turbo V12.
Automobili Pagani, the ultra-rare Italian sports car maker, has taken the wraps off its newest creation, the Utopia. The car is the third model in the brand’s lineup and is a successor to the Huayra as Pagani enters its third decade. Only 99 units of the car will be made, all of which are already sold out. The price reportedly sits at around USD 2.5 million ( Rs 19 crore).
Design wise, the Pagani Utopia is no less than a work of art. It is instantly recognizable as a Pagani too, using an evolution of the overall shape of the Huayra and has been designed to be aerodynamically efficient without the use of extra body parts. The front splitter and bonnet integrate all the cooling aerodynamics ducts. The rear has prominent wheel arches and a suspended active aerodynamic element which acts as the spoiler. The taillamps have been inspired by jet turbines. A carbon monocoque serves as the chassis for the car which also uses new composite materials such as Carbo-Titanium and Carbo-Triax. A new A-class carbon fibre has been developed which is 38 per cent stiffer by density used for the aesthetic body parts.
Pagani is renowned for its exquisite levels of detail and aesthetic interiors and Utopia is no less. The cabin uses large simple pieces and, unlike cars of this age, does not have a screen in the middle. The screen is used only for the instrument display to display vital information along with analogue dials. The central console houses many analogue dials which display turbo pressure, oil pressure, while the section below houses the dials and physical controls for climate control. The steering has been machined from a single block of aluminium.
This is the age of electrified powertrain, with even the mainstream high-performance manufacturers such as Ferrari and Lamborghini have or are going to go electric. However, Pagani has retained a non-hybrid powertrain for the Utopia. The 6.0-litre V12 has been sourced from Mercedes-AMG and produces 852bhp and 1100Nm of torque. Pagani offers the car with two gearbox options; a 7-speed automated manual transmission and a 7-speed manual which comes with a fully exposed housing. Although Pagani has not provided performance figures yet, expect the car to match the standard of sub 3-second launches from 0 to 100kmph.
Pagani has added many elements to match its engine performance, such as forged aluminium suspension with independent double wishbone with helical springs and coaxial shock absorbers, semi-active shock absorbers which are comfortable for the road and rigid for the track and more. The car comes with 21-inch alloys for the front and 22-inch rear, shod with Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres developed specifically for the car.
All 99 units of the Pagani Utopia are already sold out. But expect more derivatives of the car to be introduced in the coming years, similar to the Huayra which ultimately got nearly 8 versions with several more one-off variants.
