Salem Corporation sterilised over 21,000 dogs in five years and vaccinated 3,140 in 2025-2026, addressing stray dog issues.
The Salem Corporation has sterilised 21,066 dogs in the last five years through the animal birth control (ABC) centres.
The two ABC centres functioning in the city, at Vaikkalpattarai (Ward 9) and Shevapet (Ward 28), facilitated sterilisation for 21,066 dogs from January 2021 to December 2025 (2021- 695 dogs, 2022- 3,169, 2023- 4,668, 2024- 10,102, 2025- 2,432).
Due to COVID-19 in 2021, the sterilisation process reduced drastically. Additionally, in 2025, due to the absence of a dedicated veterinary doctor from February to July, no sterilisation was performed on dogs.
The Corporation is also conducting special vaccination camps every week in the city limits and in 2025-2026, a total of 3,140 dogs were vaccinated.
Residents of Vaikkalpattarai demanded to shift the ABC centre from their locality due to an increase in stray dog menace. The residents alleged that dogs after sterilisation were released in their locality.
Denying the allegation, the Corporation officials said those who reared female dogs shifted the puppies to the locality in the ABC centre which turned into a problem for the residents. Officials added that the dogs, after sterilisation, were released at the same places from which they were captured.
