On this day in 1989, Satyajit Ray received France's highest civilian honour

Satyajit Ray was conferred with France's highest civilian award, the Legion of Honour, on February 2, 1989. Then French President Francois Mitterrand arrived in Kolkata to present the filmmaker with this prestigious French national order of merit.

Late filmmaker Satyajit Ray, known for his iconic Apu trilogy, was conferred with France's highest civilian award, the Legion of Honour, on February 2, 1989. Ray was 67 then, and the erstwhile French President Francois Mitterrand travelled to Kolkata to honour the filmmaker for his contribution to world cinema.

Ray was awarded the Commander of the Legion of Honour (Commandeur de la Lgion d'Honneur) at a conferment ceremony held in Kolkata's National Library. In a rare gesture, President Mitterrand had arrived in Kolkata to present Ray with the prestigious French national honour.

Originally established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, the Legion of Honour — once known as the Imperial Order of the Legion of Honour — is divided into five distinct classes. Over the decades, this prestigious order has been preserved by every French government and administration, undergoing only slight changes and remaining the nation's highest mark of merit.

The award recognised Ray's exceptional contribution to world cinema as a filmmaker. His internationally acclaimed body of work — including the Apu trilogy (Pather Panchali, Aparajito, Apur Sansar), Charulata, Jalshaghar, Mahanagar and the Goopy Gyne-Baagha Byne films — brought Indian cinema global recognition since the 1950s and elevated his status as one of the world's great auteurs. His humanistic storytelling, mastery of neorealist influences, and influence on international cinema earned him this prestigious distinction from the French government. This honour is often listed alongside Ray's other major recognitions, such as the honorary Academy Award (1992) and Bharat Ratna (1992), reflecting his lifetime impact on cinema. The late filmmaker was also awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1984 and the Akira Kurosawa Award in 1992, among other national and international honours.

Recently, Ray's celebrated film Aranyer Din Ratri (Days and Nights in the Forest, 1970) was showcased in Delhi in its 4K restored version at a special screening, which was also attended by Sharmila Tagore, who was a part of the film.
