T20 World Cup: Australia's Glenn Maxwell has said that he isn't ready to call time on his career just yet, aiming to make it to the LA Olympics and the next edition of the T20 World Cup in 2028.
Glenn Maxwell has dismissed the notion that he is set to retire soon, saying that he wants to play more T20Is for Australia. Maxwell also decided not to put a finishing date on his career, opening up on his desire to play in the LA Olympics and T20 World Cup in 2028.
Maxwell didn't have the best of campaigns in this year's T20 World Cup, as he managed scores of 9, 31 and 22 during the World Cup, striking at a surprisingly low rate of 110.71 — well below his usual standards. He even recorded the slowest 30-plus knock of his career. This prompted Ricky Ponting to say that Maxwell won't be part of Australia's squad in 2028 following their early exit from the T20 World Cup 2026.
Speaking to reporters, Maxwell said that he won't be making any call in the short-term.
"I think not making a decision around my future was probably based more on what's to come over the next 12 months," Maxwell told reporters on Wednesday in Melbourne. "There's not a whole lot of T20 cricket planned, so there's probably no need to make any sort of formal announcements, and just see how my body's going and see how I'm travelling and if there's opportunities to play in the future, hopefully I'm fit and firing."
When asked specifically about the Olympics and T20 World Cup in 2028, Maxwell said that he is hoping to play on till then. The all-rounder will be 40 by the time the two tournaments are about to start.
"Fit and firing? Hopefully," Maxwell said. "But yeah, not setting any dates."
