New TB treatment regimen introduced

The Government Medical College Hospital has introduced a new treatment regimen for treating the MDRTB (Multidrug Resistant Tuberculosis) patients, which costs up to Rs. 5 lakh in the private hospitals.
Dean Nehru launched the programme on Wednesday under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEB) by administering Shorter Oral Bedaquiline of MDRTB regimen to a patient.
According to Dr. Nehru, World Health Organization (WHO) and Central TB Division (CTD) guidelines are stipulating needleless treatment method, which has been introduced with newer and effective drug and the duration of the treatment lasts up to 11 months. MDRTB can be completely cured if the medication is taken regularly for the full duration as prescribed by the physician.
“The treatment, which costs around Rs. 5 lakh, is provided for all eligible MDRTB patients free of cost,” Dr. Nehru said.
Deputy Director (Tuberculosis) Sundaralingam said that this latest treatment regimen would create TB-free Tamil Nadu by 2025.
Resident Medical Officer, TKMCH, Silas Jayamani, Deputy Superintendent Kumaran, Head of the Department of Thoracic Medicine, Sangamitra, and Medical Officer, TB Cell, Kather Mohaideen Sheriff were present.

A team of agricultural scientists and students from Iowa State University, U.S., visited the expansive farmlands of Kollengode earlier this week. The 14-member delegation, led by Ajay Nair, professor of agriculture, and Catherine Suboda, associate professor, studied various farming practices being followed in and around the region.
