Lalit Modi announced on July 14 that he is dating Sushmita Sen. Meanwhile, let's take a look at some throwback quotes of the actress on marriage and relationships.
“She can turn you on with just her conversation,” Karan Johar had once said about Sushmita Sen, and rightly so! Sushmita is not someone to mince her words. The actress is unapologetically and unabashedly herself. Sushmita, who was last seen in Aarya 2, is strong, smart, sassy, independent, happy and proud of her own self. On July 14, fans were in for a surprise when former IPL chairman Lalit Modi announced a “new beginning” with Sushmita Sen. He also shared some adorable pictures with the actress that sent fans into a frenzy. While the actress starts this new chapter in her life with Lalit, here's looking at some of her powerful quotes on marriage.
Sushmita Sen, in conversation with Twinkle Khanna for her YouTube channel Tweak India, spoke about various aspects of her life. During their interaction, Sushmita said that her kids Renne and Alisah were never the reason she opted to stay unmarried, but men were. She said, "After I adopted Renee, there was no man thereafter who came into my life that didn’t know what my priorities were. Well, I don’t expect anyone to share the responsibility, but you cannot ask me to step away from it. My daughter needs me till a certain age."
The actress added, "Luckily, I have met some very interesting men in my life, but the only reason I never got married is because they were a let-down. It had nothing to do with my kids. My kids were never in the equation and if at all, I think they have been very gracious. They have accepted people in my life with open arms, never made a face, and gave equal measure of love and respect to everyone. So, kids were never a problem. I came close to getting married thrice, but God saved me. I can’t tell you what disaster followed with their respective lives. God saved me and my kids."
Sushmita Sen, in an old appearance on Rendezvous with Simi Garewal, spoke about how she has been shaped by the relationships in her life - be it with men, women or children. She also spoke about the feelings she was left with after failed romantic bonds. Simi said that Sushmita could very well have gotten married ‘two or three times’, but chose not to. Sushmita said that it was all for the best. “I’ve been very lucky. There have been time when I could have made a mistake, but something, somewhere has gone wrong, and told me in no uncertain words that ‘this is wrong, this will not work out’. And then, with as much dignity left, I have managed to walk away from it,” she said.
Sushmita Sen once said, "I don’t need a man in my life to have diamonds. I can own them myself." Later, while speaking to Brides Today, the actress opened up about her statement and said, "I have never allowed anyone to gift me diamonds. In fact, I had gifted myself a 22-carat diamond ring many years ago, which I wear everywhere. People watch me go shopping for groceries and wonder ‘What is she wearing?!’. But I’m proud that I could do that for myself. For me, my diamond ring is a symbol of hope and empowerment. I believe that all women should be independent, especially financially."
Back in 2010, Sushmita Sen was tired of being quizzed about her wedding plans. The Bollywood beauty had then said that she will definitely tie the knot one day. Grapevine was abuzz at the time that the former Miss Universe has recently broken up with former Pakistani cricketer Wasim Akram. "I will definitely get married but it is not that it has to happen at a certain age. I am tired of answering how my man will look. I will bring in the sample for everyone when I find the right person," Sushmita told PTI.
In 2012, Sushmita Sen had said during a promotion that she is ready for marriage. The actress had said, “I will get married soon. It is in the pipeline. I believe in the institution.” She, however, refused to reveal the name of the guy. “There are many in the queue,” she laughed. There were also talks of a signature Sushmita Sen show on television and a fashion week for a beauty pageant I Am She. "Once I have achieved these, I’ll get married,” Sushmita added.
